Trump Proposes Tougher Sanctions on Russia, Meets Zelenskyy After Tense White House Meeting

As the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to intensify, former U.S. President Donald Trump recently floated the possibility of imposing stronger sanctions on Russia and questioned whether Russian President Vladimir Putin truly wants to end the war.

Trump’s post about Putin came shortly after his in-person meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Rome — their first in-person session since their heated confrontation at the White House. The meeting took place just before the funeral of Pope Francis.

Trump wrote that there was no justification for Putin to launch missiles into civilian areas, cities, and towns in recent days. He also suggested that Putin might be “just dragging [him] along” and that he should be dealt with differently, possibly through banking sanctions or secondary sanctions.

Vice President JD Vance shared Trump’s statement on his X account.

The Meeting with Zelenskyy and Controversial Peace Proposal

The White House described the meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy as “very productive,” but did not provide additional details on the discussion. Zelenskyy called the meeting “good” and added, “It is a very symbolic meeting that has the potential to become historic if we achieve joint results.”

Earlier this week, Trump put forward a proposal to end the Russia-Ukraine war. The deal reportedly included, in part, recognition of Crimea under Russian control — a major point of contention, as Zelenskyy has repeatedly called this a “red line” he cannot accept.

In his Saturday Truth Social post, Trump acknowledged that Russia “stole” Crimea from Ukraine — a rare admission from the U.S. president that Russia’s annexation of the region was illegal. He also criticized former President Barack Obama, suggesting that Obama “made it possible for Russia to steal Crimea from Ukraine without even a shot being fired.”

Trump Pushes for Peace Negotiations

Trump emphasized that the two sides were “very close to a deal” and called for high-level meetings between Russia and Ukraine to “finish it off.” He claimed that “most of the major points are agreed to.”

However, Zelenskyy later reiterated that Crimea belongs to Ukraine, reaffirming his stance against any compromise on the issue.
